When you’re researching your parent’s options for senior living, information overload is all too easy. To gain clarity, check out our answers below to frequently asked questions, or reach out to one of our team members.
What is the difference between an assisted living community and a nursing home?
While an assisted living community and a nursing home are both options for senior living, they are quite different.
If your loved one needs intensive medical care, consider choosing a nursing home. Skilled nursing is for seniors who need 24-hour supervision and skilled medical services. A nursing home also serves those who need short-term rehabilitation after a hospital stay or a decline in health.
In contrast, an assisted living community is ideal if your parent needs help taking medication, cooking meals, cleaning the house, bathing, or dressing. At The Ashford, we’ll help you choose the services that best reflect your loved one’s needs. Our community empowers your parent to maintain independence and enjoy a sense of personal freedom and autonomy.
How can my parent pay for assisted living? What options do we have?
In Ohio, most seniors pay for assisted living by themselves or with help from their family. However, if your loved one has an uncertain financial future, you do have options.
Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living expenses. If you go to Medicare’s website, you’ll see that long-term care is not covered by Part A or Part B of Medicare coverage. However, while your loved one won’t find assistance with Medicare, he or she may be eligible for the Assisted Living Waiver through Medicaid.
Will private insurance pay for assisted living?
Unfortunately, private insurance won’t cover assisted living fees. However, be sure to visit our Financial Resources page to read about long-term care insurance.
The Ashford offers affordable assisted living. What is this?

No matter my parent’s needs, what services are automatically included in the monthly rent?
While The Ashford offers several options for senior living, your loved one’s monthly rent automatically includes…
A room with a full bathroom, walk-in shower, and kitchen/kitchenette.
Personal control over heating and air conditioning.
Weekly help with housekeeping.
Access to our community laundry room/laundry services (depending on the package selected).
Utilities such as electricity, water, and gas.
A continental breakfast and evening meal.
All activities and social programming.
A 24-hour emergency response system.
How do I determine if The Ashford can help my loved one?
Unless your loved one has medical conditions that require skilled nursing, The Ashford will support your parent’s independence.
To comprehensively meet your parent’s needs, we’ll assess your loved one and create a personally tailored plan of care. (For more information on our process, visit our Senior Care Services page.)
Whether your loved one is primarily independent or could use some extra assistance, The Ashford has an assisted living option for your parent.
Can my parent bring any furnishings and decorations?
Yes. The Ashford does not provide any furniture for your loved one’s apartment.
Personal belongings can ease your loved one’s transition and introduce his or her unique personality to The Ashford.
Please bring all items when your parent moves in. Our team members are more than happy to help you create a list of items your parent will need.
Does The Ashford allow pets?
Furry friends are welcome at The Ashford!
To ensure Fluffy or Fido can come along, have The Ashford approve your parent’s pet and ensure your loved one pays the one-time deposit required.
What if my loved one needs transportation to the doctor?
At The Ashford, we’re happy to provide medical transportation up to five miles from our communities.
If the doctor is farther away, we can transport your loved one for a small fee.
However, your parent doesn’t need to travel for medical appointments. At The Ashford, your family member can request on-site visits from a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant for an additional fee.
What is The Ashford’s emergency response system?
Each apartment has a pull chord your loved one can use to signal his or her need for immediate help.
However, our options for senior living also include a wearable pendant. If your parent prefers, he or she can choose an emergency response pendant for an additional fee.
What makes your dining services special?
At The Ashford, we offer a blend of healthy culinary as well as the comfort foods your parent loves. You’ll find that each community provides made-from-scratch meals.
You mention that private dining is an amenity. What is this?
Our private dining rooms hold 10 to 12 people and are completely complimentary.
Be sure to enjoy a special time with your loved one—gather with family for Mom’s birthday, or hold a special reunion for Dad’s friends.
